OpenAI has added several powerful updates to the Responses API, making it easier for developers to build smart assistants and advanced AI tools.
1. Support for Remote MCP Servers
The Responses API now works with the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This means developers can connect models to remote MCP servers using just a few lines of code. OpenAI is also helping guide the future of MCP by joining its steering committee.
2. Image Generation Tool
You can now generate images through the Responses API. It allows you to preview images as they’re being created and make step-by-step edits to refine them. This makes it easier to create high-quality visuals interactively.
3. Code Interpreter Support
The popular Code Interpreter is now included. It can handle data analysis, coding, math, and even image-based reasoning (what OpenAI calls “thinking with images”). Models like o3 and o4-mini have shown improved performance using this tool.
4. Smart File Search
The API can now search through documents and return the most relevant sections. It supports searching across two vector stores and filtering results using attributes. This helps models quickly find the right information.

- Background Mode: Run tasks in the background asynchronously.
- Reasoning Summaries: Get a quick overview of how the model reached its answer.
- Encrypted Reasoning Items: Reuse logic across API calls securely, especially useful for organizations.
