Google is adding a new image editing feature to its Gemini app. Now, users can edit images just by typing instructions in a chat with Gemini—either on the app or the website. This tool, which was previously only in Google AI Studio, is being released more widely and supports 45 languages.
With this update, users can edit both AI-generated pictures and their own uploaded photos. For example, you can ask Gemini to change your hairstyle, remove objects from the background, or even add new things to your images. This works like the “Reimagine” feature on Google Pixel phones, which can add fake items to real photos.
The key advantage is how easy it is to use. You don’t need to know anything about photo editing. Just upload a photo and tell Gemini what you want changed. The AI will remember your past edits, so you can keep adjusting the same image over several messages. You can even ask it to create a story and images to go with it.
However, these tools raise concerns about fake images being misused. To help address this, Google will add an invisible watermark to all AI-edited images. It’s also testing visible watermarks to help people recognize when an image has been changed using AI.
This new feature starts rolling out on May 1, 2025. However, it won’t be available for users with Google Workspace or education accounts yet.
